Test F: Instrument Cluster Indicators Inoperative

  1. Review description and operation prior to performing test. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  .
  2. Verify instrument cluster is inoperative or inaccurate. If instrument cluster does not operate normally, go to next step. If instrument cluster operates normally, diagnose intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - PRIZM article.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check operation of left and right turn signal, high beam and defogger indicators. If left and right turn signal, high beam and defogger indicators do not illuminate, go to next step. If left and right turn signal, high beam and defogger indicators illuminate, go to step  6 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 13-pin harness connector C2. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 12 (White/Black wire). See Figure . If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step  12 .
  5. Repair open in White/Black wire between instrument cluster and ground. Ground is located behind center of instrument cluster, mounted to left support bracket. After repair, go to step  14 .
  6. Check operation of door ajar, CRUISE (if equipped), BRAKE, O/D OFF (if equipped), MIL, oil pressure, ABS (if equipped), seat belt, and low fuel indicators. If all indicators do not illuminate, go to next step. If all indicators illuminate, go to step  8 .
  7. Disconnect instrument cluster 10-pin harness connector C1. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Blue wire). See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace instrument cluster printed circuit. After repair, go to step  14 .
  9. Disconnect junction block No. 3 Gray 22-pin harness connector C2. Junction block No. 3 is located behind center of instrument panel. Measure resistance in Red/Blue wire between junction block No. 3 harness connector C2 terminal No. 18 and instrument cluster harness connector C1 terminal No. 2. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step  11 .
  10. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C1 terminal No. 2 (Red/Blue wire). If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step  11 . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step  8 .
  11. Repair open or short to ground in Red/Blue wire between instrument cluster and junction block No. 3. After repair, go to step  14 .
  12. Check instrument cluster harness connector C2 for loose terminals or corrosion. If instrument cluster harness connector C2 has loose terminals or corrosion, go to next step. If instrument cluster harness connector C2 does not have loose terminals or corrosion, go to step  8 .
  13. Repair instrument cluster harness connector C2. After repair, go to next step.
  14. Operate system to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step  3 .
