Test E: Fuel Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative

  1. Review description and operation prior to performing test. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  .
  2. Verify fuel gauge is inoperative or inaccurate. If fuel gauge does not operate normally, go to next step. If fuel gauge operates normally, diagnose intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - PRIZM article.
  3. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Measure resistance in instrument cluster printed circuit between screw head IG+ and screw head FU. Resistance should be 104-114 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  6 .
  4. Measure resistance in instrument cluster printed circuit between screw head IG+ and screw head SE. Resistance should be 221-231 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  6 .
  5. Measure resistance instrument cluster printed circuit between screw head FU and screw head SE. Resistance should be 114-124 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step. If resistance is as specified, go to step  7 .
  6. Replace fuel gauge. After repair, go to step  14 .
  7. Inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for damage or corrosion. If instrument cluster printed circuit is not okay, go to next step. If instrument cluster printed circuit is okay, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace instrument cluster printed circuit. After repair, go to step  14 .
  9. Disconnect fuel sending unit 3-pin harness connector. Measure resistance in Yellow/Red wire between instrument cluster harness connector C1 terminal No. 9 and fuel sending unit. See Figure . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step  12 .
  10. Measure resistance in Brown wire between fuel sending unit and ground. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step  13 .
  11. Repair open in Brown wire between fuel sending unit and ground. Ground is located behind center of instrument cluster, mounted to right support. After repair, go to step  14 .
  12. Repair open or short in Yellow/Red wire between instrument cluster and fuel sending unit. After repair, go to step  14 .
  13. Replace fuel sending unit. After repair, go to next step.
  14. Operate system to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step  3 .
