Test D: Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative

  1. Review description and operation prior to performing test. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  .
  2. Verify Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge is inoperative or inaccurate. If ECT gauge does not operate normally, go to next step. If ECT gauge operates normally, diagnose intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - PRIZM article.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect ECT sending unit. ECT sending unit is located on left side of engine, under ignition coils. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. ECT should indicate cold. If ECT gauge operates as specified, go to next step. If ECT gauge does not operate as specified, go to step  5 .
  4. Repair open or short to ground in Yellow/Green wire between ECT sending unit and instrument cluster harness connector C4. After repair, go to step  12 .
  5. Using a fused jumper wire, connect ground to ECT sending unit Yellow/Green wire terminal. ECT gauge should indicate hot. If ECT gauge operates as specified, go to next step. If ECT gauge does not operate as specified, go to step  7 .
  6. Replace ECT sending unit. After repair, go to step  12 .
  7. Disconnect instrument cluster 13-pin harness connector C4. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C4 terminal No. 2 (Brown wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, repair open in Brown wire between instrument cluster and ground. Ground point is located on back of cylinder head. After repair, go to step  12 .
  8. Measure resistance in Yellow/Green wire between instrument cluster harness connector C4 terminal No. 1 and ECT sending unit. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Green wire between instrument cluster and ECT sending unit. After repair, go to step  12 .
  9. Inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for damage. If printed circuit is damaged, go to next step. If printed circuit is not damaged, go to step  11 .
  10. Replace instrument cluster printed circuit. After repair, go to step  12 .
  11. Replace ECT gauge. After repair, go to next step.
  12. Operate system to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step  3 .
