Description & Operation: Tachometer

Voltage is applied to speedometer/odometer from GAUGE fuse (10-amp) when ignition switch is in RUN or START positions. GAUGE fuse (10-amp) is located in instrument panel junction box No. 2. See Figure . Voltage flows from GAUGE fuse (10-amp) instrument panel junction box No. 2 harness connector C2 terminal No. 9, through Red/Blue wire, to junction block No. 3 harness connector C3 terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . Voltage flows to instrument cluster assembly C1 terminal No. 2 from junction block No. 3 harness connector C2 terminal No. 18 (Red/Blue wire). Tachometer displays engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM). On 3-speed automatic transmission and manual transmission equipped models, engine RPM data is received from PCM harness connector C3 terminal No. 13 (Black wire) to instrument cluster assembly C3 terminal No. 3. On 4-speed automatic transmission equipped models, engine RPM data is received from PCM harness connector C3 terminal No. 27 (Black wire) to instrument cluster assembly C3 terminal No. 3. Tachometer responds to frequency of pulses PCM sends. When frequency pulses increase, tachometer increases.
