Description & Operation: Speedometer/Odometer

NOTE: When replacing a speedometer/odometer assembly, law requires that odometer reading of replacement unit be set in order to register same mileage as prior odometer. If same mileage cannot be set, law requires that replacement odometer be turned to zero. A label must be installed on driver's door frame in order to show previous odometer reading and date of replacement.

Voltage is applied to speedometer/odometer from GAUGE fuse (10-amp) when ignition switch is in RUN or START positions. GAUGE fuse (10-amp) is located in instrument panel junction box No. 2. See Figure . Voltage flows from GAUGE fuse (10-amp) instrument panel junction box No. 2 harness connector C2 terminal No. 9, through Red/Blue wire, to junction block No. 3 harness connector C3 terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . Voltage flows to instrument cluster assembly C1 terminal No. 2 from junction block No. 3 harness connector C2 terminal No. 18 (Red/Blue wire). Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a gear-driven permanent magnet generator housed in vehicle's transaxle. This sensor generates a sine wave output with a frequency proportional to vehicle speed. This signal has an output that is switched to ground at a frequency of one Hz per Mile per hour. This signal drives speedometer and odometer. Speedometer sends a signal to PCM and cruise control system through Purple/White wire splitting at junction block No. 3. Season odometer displays total accumulated miles of vehicle. This value is permanently stored in instrument cluster. When an instrument cluster is replaced law requires either odometer reading of replacement unit be set to register original mileage or that a label be installed on driver's door frame to show previous odometer reading and date of replacement. Since mileage CANNOT be set on odometer in this vehicle an odometer label must be used. Trip odometer displays accumulated miles to tenths of a mile since last reset.
