Test O: Turn Signal Lights &/Or Indicators Inoperative

  1. If lighting system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If lighting system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform lighting system diagnostic system check. See LIGHTING SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Move turn signal lever to right and left turn signal positions. If either left or right turn signal lights or indicators do not operate properly, go to next step. If both left and right turn signal lights and indicators operate properly, diagnose intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. If only one light and/or indicator is inoperative, go to next step. If more than one light and/or indicator are inoperative, go to step  9 .
  4. If right side turn signal indicator is inoperative, go to next step. If left turn signal indicator is inoperative, go to step  7 .
  5. Using test light connected to ground, backprobe instrument cluster harness connector terminal B1 (Dark/Blue wire). See Figure . If test light flashes, go to next step. If test light does not flash, repair open in Dark Blue wire between headlight switch and instrument cluster. After repair, go to step  18 .
  6. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal A4 (Black/White wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, replace turn signal indicator. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, repair open in Black/White wire between instrument cluster and ground. Ground point is located under left side of instrument panel, near junction block.
  7. Using test light connected to ground, backprobe instrument cluster harness connector terminal B2 (Light/Blue wire). See Figure . If test light flashes, go to next step. If test light does not flash, repair open in Light Blue wire between headlight switch and instrument cluster. After repair, go to step  18 .
  9. Inspect TURN LAMPS fuse (10-amp). Turn lights fuse is located in left instrument panel junction block. If fuse is not open, go to next step. If fuse is open, go to step  13 .
  10. Disconnect hazard switch 10-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a test light connected to ground, probe hazard switch harness connector terminal "C" (Pink wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  14 .
  11. Turn left or right turn signal to ON position. Using a fused jumper wire, connect hazard harness connector terminals "B" (Orange wire) and "K" (Purple wire). If turn signal light and indicators do not illuminate, go to next step. If turn signal lights and indicators illuminate but do not flash, go to step  16 .
  12. Reconnect hazard switch harness connector. Disconnect headlight switch 4-pin harness connector C2. Using a test light connected to ground, probe terminal "D" (Purple wire). If test light does not flash, go to step  15 . If test light flashes, go to step  17 .
  13. Repair short to ground in Pink wire between left instrument panel junction block and hazard switch. After repair, go to step  18 .
  14. Repair open in Pink wire between left instrument panel junction block and hazard switch. After repair, go to step  18 .
  15. Repair open in Purple wire between hazard switch and headlight switch. After repair, go to step  18 .
  16. Replace turn/hazard flasher. After repair, go to step  18 .
  17. Replace headlight switch assembly. After repair, go to next step.
  18. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Operate vehicle to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step  3 .
