Test D: Speedometer &/Or Odometer Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, right of steering wheel. Raise and support vehicle. Turn ignition switch to START position. Place transmission into Drive. Using scan tool, observe VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR PARAMETER in PCM ENGINE DATA 1 LIST. Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) parameter should match speedometer display in instrument cluster. If speedometer matches scan tool reading, go to next step. If speedometer does not match scan tool display, go to step  5 .
  3. If odometer operates properly, diagnose intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If odometer does not operate properly, go to step  13 .
  4. If vehicle is equipped with cruise control, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with cruise control, go to step  6 .
  5. Stop drive wheels and turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect cruise control module 10-pin harness connector. Cruise control module is located in right side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to START position. Place transmission into Drive. Using scan tool, observe VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR PARAMETER in PCM ENGINE DATA 1 LIST. VSS parameter should match speedometer display in instrument cluster. If speedometer does not match scan tool display, go to next step. If speedometer matches scan tool reading, go to step  9 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 80-pin harness connector C1. PCM is located under instrument panel, near steering wheel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector terminal No. 55 (Dark Green/White wire). See Figure . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step  8 .
  7. Disconnect instrument cluster 24-pin harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal A8 (Dark Green/White wire). Resistance should be 2 ohms or more. Measure resistance in Dark Green/White wire between PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 55 and instrument cluster harness connector terminal A8. See Figure and Figure . Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to step  10 . If resistance is not as specified, repair short to ground, open or high resistance in Dark Green/White wire between instrument cluster and PCM. After repair, go to step  15 .
  8. Disconnect instrument cluster 24-pin harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal A8 (Dark Green/White wire). See Figure . If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  11 . If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Dark Green/White wire between PCM and instrument cluster. After repair, go to step  15 .
  9. Check cruise control module harness connector for poor connections or loose terminals. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  12 . If problem does not exist, go to step  15 .
  10. Check instrument cluster harness connector for poor connections or loose terminals. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  13 . If problem does not exist, go to step  15 .
  11. Check PCM harness connectors for poor connections or loose terminals. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  14 . If problem does not exist, go to step  15 .
  12. Replace cruise control module. After repair, go to step  15 .
  13. Replace instrument cluster. After repair, go to step  15 .
  14. NOTE: New PCM needs to be programmed. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
  15. Replace PCM. After repair, go to next step.
  16. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Operate vehicle to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step  2 .
