Test L: Fasten Safety Belt Indicator/Chime Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe fasten seat belt indicator on instrument cluster during bulb check. If indicator illuminates during bulb check and then turns off, go to next step. If indicator does not illuminate during bulb check, go to step  10 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, right of steering wheel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Buckle driver's side seat belt. Using scan tool, observe SEAT BELT parameter in Body Control Module (BCM) data list. If scan tool displays BUCKLED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUCKLED, diagnose intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Ensure driver's side seat belt is unbuckled. Disconnect driver's side seat belt switch 2-pin harness connector. Using fused jumper wire (3-amp), connect driver's side seat belt switch terminals "A" (Black/White wire) and "B" (Black wire). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe SEAT BELT parameter in BCM data list. If scan tool does not display UNBUCKLED, go to next step. If scan tool displays, UNBUCKLED, go to step  8 .
  5. Measure resistance between ground and driver's side seat belt harness connector terminal "B" (Black wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between driver's side seat belt and ground. Ground point is located on left side of passenger compartment, at rocker panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Disconnect BCM 24-pin harness connector C2. BCM is located under right side of instrument panel. Measure resistance in Black/White wire between BCM harness connector C2 terminal B11 and driver's side seat belt terminal "A". Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and BCM harness connector C2 terminal B11 (Black/White wire). See Figure . Voltage should not exist. If resistance and voltage are as specified, go to next step. If resistance or voltage is not as specified, repair open, high resistance or short to voltage in Black/White wire between BCM and driver's side seat belt. After repair, go to step  12 .
  7. Check BCM harness connector for poor connection or loose terminals. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  9 . If problem does not exist, go to step  12 .
  8. Check seat belt harness connector for poor connection or loose terminals. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  11 . If problem does not exist, go to step  12 .
    9. NOTE: New BCM needs to be programmed. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
  9. Replace BCM. After repair, go to step  12 .
  10. Replace Instrument Cluster. After repair, go to step  12 .
  11. Replace driver's side seat belt. After repair, go to next step.
  12. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Operate vehicle to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step  2 .
