Test G: Low Engine Oil Level Indicator Always On

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, right of steering wheel. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH parameter in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) ENGINE DATA 2 list. If scan tool display indicates engine oil level switch parameter is okay, go to next step. If scan tool display indicates engine oil level switch parameter is not okay, go to step  4 .
  3. If engine oil level indicator is not illuminated, diagnose intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If low engine oil indicator is illuminated, go to step  11 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect engine oil level switch harness connector. Connect a fused jumper wire (3-amp), between ground and engine oil level switch harness connector terminal "B" (Brown wire). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL LEVEL SWITCH parameter. If scan tool does not indicate engine oil level is okay, go to next step. If scan tool indicates engine oil level is okay, go to step  6 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM 80-pin harness connector C2. PCM is located under instrument panel, near steering column. Measure resistance in Brown wire between PCM harness connector terminal No. 58 and engine oil level harness connector terminal "B". See Figure . Resistance should be less than 2 ohms, Measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector terminal No. 58 (Brown wire). If resistance and voltage are as specified, go to step  8 . If resistance or voltage is not as specified, repair open, high resistance or short to voltage in Brown wire between PCM and engine oil level switch. After repair, go to step  12 .
  6. Measure resistance between ground and engine oil level switch harness connector terminal "A" (Black/White wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in Black/White wire between engine oil level switch and ground. Ground point is located on front of engine, near starter. After repair, go to step  12 .
  7. Check engine oil level switch harness connectors for poor connections or loose terminals. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  9 . If problem does not exist, go to step  12 .
  8. Check PCM harness connectors for poor connections or loose terminals. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  10 . If problem does not exist, go to step  12 .
  9. Replace engine oil level switch. After repair, go to step  12 .
  10. NOTE: New PCM needs to be programmed. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
  11. Replace PCM. After repair, go to step  12 .
  12. Replace instrument cluster. After repair, go to next step.
  13. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Operate vehicle to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step  2 .
