Test F: Engine Oil Pressure Indicator Always On

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to START position and let engine idle. If engine oil pressure indicator remains illuminated, go to next step. If engine oil pressure indicator does not remain illuminated, diagnose intermittent problem. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, right of steering wheel. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH parameter in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) ENGINE DATA 2 list. If scan tool display indicates engine oil pressure switch parameter is not okay, go to next step. If scan tool display indicates engine oil pressure switch parameter is okay, go to step  10 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect engine oil pressure switch harness connector. Turn ignition switch to START position and let engine idle. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH parameter. If scan tool display indicates engine oil pressure switch parameter is not okay, go to next step. If scan tool display indicates engine oil pressure switch parameter is okay, go to step  6 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 80-pin harness connector C2. Measure resistance between ground and PCM harness connector terminal No. 19 (Tan/Black wire). See Figure . If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step  7 . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, repair short to ground in Tan/Black wire between PCM and engine oil pressure switch. After repair, go to step  11 .
  6. Check engine oil pressure switch harness connector for poor connection or loose terminal. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  8 . If problem does not exist, go to step  11
  7. Check PCM harness connectors for poor connections or loose terminals. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem still exists, go to step  9 . If problem does not exist, go to step  11 .
  8. Replace engine oil pressure switch. After repair go to step  11 .
  9. NOTE: New PCM needs to be programmed. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
  10. Replace PCM. After repair, go to step  11 .
  11. Replace instrument cluster. After repair, go to next step.
  12. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Operate vehicle to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step  2 .
