DTC P1189: Engine Oil Pressure Switch Circuit: Testing

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH parameter in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) ENGINE DATA 2 list. If scan tool does not indicate low engine oil pressure, go to next step. If scan tool indicates engine oil pressure is low, diagnose intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect engine oil pressure switch harness connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and engine oil pressure switch harness connector Tan/Black wire terminal. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH in PCM ENGINE DATA 2 list. If scan tool does not indicate low engine oil pressure, go to next step. If scan tool indicates low engine oil pressure, go to step  5 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM 80-pin harness connector C2. PCM is located under left side of instrument, near steering column. Measure resistance in Tan/Black wire between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 19 and engine oil pressure switch harness connector. See Figure . Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and PCM harness connector terminal No. 19 (Tan/Black wire). Resistance should be 2 ohms or more. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector terminal No. 19 (Tan/Black wire). Voltage should not exist. If resistance and voltage are as specified, go to step  7 . If resistance and voltage are not as specified, repair open, short to voltage or short to ground in Tan/Black wire between PCM and engine oil pressure switch. After repair, go to step  10 .
  5. Measure resistance between ground and engine oil pressure switch case. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, inspect engine oil pressure threads for proper ground. After repair, go to step  10 .
  6. Inspect harness connector of engine oil pressure switch for poor connection or loose terminal. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 . If problem still exists, go to step  8 .
  7. Inspect harness connector of PCM for poor connections or loose terminals. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 . If problem still exists, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace engine oil pressure switch. After repair, go to step  10 .
  9. NOTE: New PCM needs to be programmed. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
  10. Replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repair, go to next step.
  11. Using scan tool clear all DTCs. Operate vehicle within code enabling criteria. If DTC does not reset, system is okay. If DTC resets, go to step  2 .
