Test B: Starter Solenoid Does Not Click (Late Production)

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check for Engine Electrical? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL .
- Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the engine crank? If yes, go to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . If no, go to next step.
- Install a scan tool. With a scan tool, observe the Crank Request Signal parameter in the powertrain control module (PCM) data list. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the scan tool display Yes? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 14 .
- With a scan tool, observe the Crank parameter in the instrument panel cluster (IPC) data list. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the scan tool display Yes? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 18 .
- With a scan tool, observe the Crank parameter in the body control module (BCM) data list. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the scan tool display Yes? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 19 .
- With a scan tool, observe the Starter Relay Command parameter in the PCM data list. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the scan tool display Enabled? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK in ANTI-THEFT.
- Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the starter relay click? If yes, go to step 10 . If no, go to next step.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the starter relay. Turn ON the ignition, with the Engine OFF. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the starter relay coil and a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 20 .
- Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the starter relay coil and the control circuit of the starter relay. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 27 . If no, go to step 21 .
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the starter relay. The engine may crank when the fused jumper is put into place. Connect a 30 amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit of the starter relay switch circuit and the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid. Does the engine crank? If yes, go to step 27 . If no, go to next step.
- Does the fuse in the jumper open? If yes, go to step 15 . If no, go to next step.
- Disconnect the fused jumper wire. Reinstall the starter relay. Disconnect the park neutral position (PNP) switch. Connect a 30 amp fused jumper between the park/neutral signal circuit of the PNP switch and the starter solenoid supply voltage circuit of the PNP switch. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the engine crank? If yes, go to step 26 . If no, go to next step.
- Connect a test lamp between the park/neutral signal circuit of the PNP switch and a good ground. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 23 . If no, go to step 32 .
- Disconnect the harness connection of the PCM. Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit of the PCM and a good ground. Turn the ignition to the START Position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 28 . If no, go to step 17 .
- Disconnect the park neutral position (PNP) switch. Replace the 30 amp fuse in the jumper wire. Does the fuse in the jumper open? If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to next step.
- Reinstall the starter relay. Connect a 30 amp fused jumper between the park/neutral signal circuit of the PNP switch and the starter solenoid supply voltage circuit of the PNP switch. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the fuse in the jumper open? If yes, go to step 22 . If no, go to step 26 .
- Test the crank voltage signal circuit of the PCM for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 29 .
- Test the crank signal circuit of the IPC for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 24 .
- Test the crank signal circuit of the BCM for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 25 .
- Test the battery positive voltage circuit of the starter relay coil for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 29 .
- Test the control circuit of the starter relay for an open, high resistance or short to battery voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 28 .
- Test the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 30 .
- Test the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 30 .
- Inspect for poor connection at the IPC harness connector. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 36 .
- Inspect for poor connection at the BCM harness connector. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 37 .
- Inspect the PNP switch for proper operation. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH . Inspect for poor connection at the PNP switch harness connector. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 33 .
- Inspect for poor connections at the starter relay. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 34 .
- Inspect for poor connection at the PCM harness connector. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 35 .
- Inspect for poor connections at the ignition switch harness connector. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 38 .
- Inspect for poor connections at the starter solenoid. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 40 . If no, go to step 39 .
- Repair the short to ground in the park/neutral signal circuit of the PNP switch. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 40 .
- Repair the open or high resistance in the park/neutral signal circuit of the PNP switch. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 40 .
- Replace the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 40 .
- Replace the starter relay. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 40 .
- Perform the set up procedures for the PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE . Replace the PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 40 .
- Replace the IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANELS. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 40 .
- Perform the set up procedures for the BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULES. Replace the BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULES. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 40 .
- Replace the ignition switch. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 40 .
- Replace the starter motor. See STARTER . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to next step.
- Operate the system for which the symptom occurred. Did you correct the condition? If yes, the system is okay. If no, go to step 2 .
