Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue, and 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan.
CAUTION: To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the engine mount strut.
  3. Disconnect the cooling fan wiring harness from the engine wiring harness.
  4. Reposition the wiring harness at the upper radiator support.
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6. Remove the cooling fan shroud bolts.
  7. Remove the LH radiator bracket.
  8. Remove the cooling fan shroud with the electric cooling fan motors and cooling fan.

  9. Disconnect the cooling fan wiring harness from each cooling fan motor.

  10. Remove the cooling fan heat shield.

  11. Remove the cooling fan blade nuts.
  12. Remove the cooling fan blades.
  13. Inspect the cooling fans for the following conditions:
    1. 13.1. Bent or cracked cooling fan blades
    2. 13.2. Smoothness of the cooling fan blade mating surfaces
    3. 13.3. Remove burrs or other imperfections as necessary
