Removal & Installation: Transaxle: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner intake duct. See AIR CLEANER INTAKE DUCT  .
  3. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connectors from the transaxle and the PNP switch.
  4. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch and the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.
  5. Remove the ground wire nuts and the ground wires from the studs.
  6. CAUTION: The transaxle/engine bolts must be returned to their original position. The bolt installed in position number (5) is two millimeters shorter then the other transaxle/engine bolts and requires the use of thread sealant. The bolt installed in position number (3) has a special pilot point. See Fig 1 .

  7. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (1, 3, 4 and 5). See Fig 1 .
  8. Remove the engine mount strut bracket from the upper radiator support. See ENGINE MOUNT STRUT BRACKET  .
  9. Install appropriate engine support fixture.
  10. Raise and support the vehicle.
  11. Drain the transaxle fluid. See LUBRICATION in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.
  12. Remove the frame from the vehicle. See FRAME REPLACEMENT  .
  13. CAUTION: Ensure the transaxle jack is properly secured to the transaxle.
  14. Position a transaxle jack under the transaxle and safely secure transaxle.
  15. Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube bolt. See Fig 2 .
  16. Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube.
  17. Remove the torque converter cover bolts. See Fig 3 .
  18. Remove the torque converter cover.

  19. Remove the starter motor. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL.
  20. Use the appropriate flywheel holder in order to gain access to the torque converter bolts and prevent the flywheel from turning. See Fig 4 .
  21. Remove the torque converter bolts. See Fig 5 .
  22. Remove the transaxle oil cooler pipes from the transaxle. See OIL COOLER HOSE/PIPES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.

  23. Remove the wheel drive shafts from the transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  24. Secure the wheel drive shafts to the steering knuckle and the struts.
  25. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
  26. Remove the transaxle brace. See TRANSAXLE BRACE  .
  27. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and the stud (0). See Fig 1 .
  28. Using the transaxle jack, lower and remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  29. Remove the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.
  30. Remove the transaxle mount. See TRANSAXLE MOUNT  .
  31. If the transaxle is being disassembled and inspected, see 4T65-E OVERHAUL article.
  32. Use the transaxle oil cooler flusher to flush the transaxle oil cooler and the transaxle oil cooler hose/pipes. See OIL COOLER FLUSHING under LUBRICATION in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.
