Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire and 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Lubricate the valve tips.

  2. Install the hydraulic element lash adjusters.

  3. Install the camshaft roller followers.

  4. Ensure that the alignment notches are aligned with the camshaft sprocket.

  5. Install the intake camshaft.

  7. Install the camshaft bearing caps.
  8. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in increments of 3 turns until they are seated.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

  9. Apply anaerobic sealer, 5 mm (0.197 in) bead, GM P/N 1052942 (Canadian P/N 10953466) to the rear intake camshaft bearing cap.

  11. Install the rear intake camshaft bearing cap bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 25 N.m (19 lb ft).

  12. Install camshaft sprockets onto the camshafts.
  13. Hand tighten NEW camshaft sprocket bolts.
  14. Remove the J 43655. 
  15. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 85 N.m (63 lb ft) plus 30 degrees.

  16. Install the upper timing chain guide.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the upper timing chain guide to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

  17. Install the power steering pump.

    Tighten

    Tighten the power steering pump bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  18. Install the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
