Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If SIR Diagnostic System Check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR Diagnostic System Check has not been performed, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect front end discriminating sensor in-line connector C101. See Fig 1. Inspect both sides of connector for signs of corrosion, damaged terminals or poor connections. If no damage is found, go to next step. If damage is found, replace connectors. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  8.
  3. Disconnect front end discriminating sensor connector. Inspect both sides of connector for signs of corrosion, damaged terminals or poor connections. If no damage is found, go to next step. If damage is found on harness side of connector, replace connector. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  8. If damage is found on front end discriminating sensor, go to step  7.
  4. Disconnect SDM harness connector. Inspect connector for signs of corrosion, damaged terminals or poor connections. If no damage is found, go to next step. If damage is found, replace SDM harness connector. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  8.
    NOTE: Use Digital Multimeter (J-39200) and Connector Test Adapter Kit (J-35616-A) or Flat Wire Probe Adapter Kit (J-42675) when performing electrical tests.
  5. Measure resistance between front end discriminating sensor terminals "A" and "B". If resistance is more than 950 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 950 ohms or less, go to step  7.
  6. Measure resistance between SDM connector terminal A11 and ground. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is less than infinite, repair short to ground in circuit 1834. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  8.
  7. Replace discriminating sensor. See FRONT END DISCRIMINATING SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  8. Reconnect all SIR components. Using scan tool, clear all SIR DTC's. Road test vehicle, then check for DTC's. If DTC resets, go to step  2. If DTC does not reset, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK
