Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Are DTCs P0443, P0449, P0452 or P0453 also set? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. With a scan tool, monitor the Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP). Does the scan tool indicate fuel tank pressure out of the specified value of -0.5 to 0.5 in. H2O? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  5 .
  4. With a scan tool, monitor the FTP voltage. Does scan tool indicate that FTP voltage is greater than 4.3 V? If yes, go to DTC P0453: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT - HIGH VOLTAGE  . If no, go to step  6 .
  5. Disconnect purge pipe from EVAP canister purge valve. Install a hand-held vacuum gauge to EVAP canister purge valve purge port. Disconnect EVAP canister purge valve harness connector. Monitor vacuum on vacuum gauge. Start and allow engine to idle. Increase engine speed to 1200-1500 RPM. Does vacuum gauge indicate an increase in vacuum? If yes, go to step  7 . If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  6. Replace fuel tank pressure sensor. When complete, go to step  8 .
  7. Replace the EVAP canister purge valve. When complete, go to next step.
  8. Use a scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  3 .
  9. Using scan tool, observe stored information and Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that have not diagnosed? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, system is okay.
