Circuit Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The internal circuitry of the PCM can identify if the vehicle fuel system is capable of supplying adequate amounts of fuel during heavy acceleration or power enrichment. When a power enrichment mode of operation is requested during a Closed Loop operation, by heavy acceleration, the PCM will provide more fuel to the engine. Under these conditions, the PCM should detect a rich condition. If you do not detect a rich exhaust at this time, a DTC P1171 will set. A plugged fuel filter or a restricted fuel line can prevent adequate amounts of fuel from being supplied during the power enrichment mode.
