Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Install a scan tool. Are any component DTCs set? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Idle engine at the normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within the Conditions for Running this DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  . Does the scan tool indicate that the DTC failed this ignition? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  4. Turn ignition off. Inspect to see that the O2S 1 is securely installed. Inspect for corrosion on terminals. Inspect for terminal tension at O2S 1 electrical connector and PCM electrical connector. Inspect O2S 1 ground circuit for a good connection. Inspect for any damaged wiring. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  10 . If no, go to next step.
  5. CAUTION: Avoid contact with moving parts and hot surfaces while working around a running engine in order to prevent physical injury.
  6. Start engine. Inspect exhaust manifold for an exhaust leak near the engine. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  18 . If no, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the HO2S. Jumper the HO2S low signal circuit to a good ground. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Measure the voltage on the HO2S high signal circuit on the PCM side, using a Digital Multimeter (DMM) that is connected to a good ground. Does the voltage measure within 351-551 mV? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  11 .
  8. Connect a jumper wire between the O2S 1 high signal circuit, on the PCM side of the high signal circuit to a ground. Does the scan tool voltage indicate that the O2S 1 voltage is less than 20 mV? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  12 .
  9. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the HO2S. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  18 . If no, go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition off. Determine and correct the cause of the contamination in order to prevent damage to replacement sensors. Check for fuel contamination, use of improper RTV sealant or excessive engine oil/coolant consumption. Replace the O2S 1. When complete, go to step  18 .
  11. Repair the condition as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18 .
  12. Turn ignition off. Repair the O2S 1 high signal circuit for a short to ground. After repairs, go to step  18 .
  13. Remove the jumper wire. Measure the voltage between the O2S 1 high signal circuit and ground using a DMM. Does the O2S 1 voltage measure greater than 407 mV? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  14 .
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors. Test the O2S 1 low signal circuit for continuity. If the O2S 1 low signal circuit measures greater than 5 ohms, check for an open circuit or faulty connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  18 . If no, go to step  15 .
  15. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors. Test the O2S 1 high signal circuit for continuity. If the O2S 1 low signal circuit measures greater than 5 ohms, check for an open circuit or a faulty electrical terminal connection. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  18 . If no, go to step  16 .
  16. Inspect the O2S 1 low signal circuit for a poor connection at the PCM. If you find a problem, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  18 . If no, go to step  17 .
  17. Inspect the O2S 1 high signal circuit for a poor connection at the PCM. If you find a problem, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  18 . If no, go to next step.
  18. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  19. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2 .
  20. Using scan tool, observe stored information and Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, system is okay.
