Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Install a scan tool. Are any other DTCs set? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Allow engine to idle. Observe the CMP Resync Counter with the scan tool. Is the CMP Resync Counter incrementing? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector. Start the engine. Observe CMP Resync on the scan tool. Did the CMP Resync Counter stop incrementing? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Check for a poor electrical connection at the CMP sensor electrical connector. Repair the electrical connector as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  9 . If no, go to next step.
  6. Replace the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. When complete, go to step  9 .
  7. Disconnect the PCM electrical connector. Check the CMP terminals for a poor electrical connection. Repair the terminals as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  9 . If no, go to next step.
  8. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  9. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2 .
  10. Using scan tool, observe stored information and Capture Info. If scan tool displays any undiagnosed DTCs, diagnose affected DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no other DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
