Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire and 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE in Engine Electrical.
    CAUTION: Refer to SIR CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in SIR.
  3. With a flat-bladed tool, remove the instrument panel (I/P) defroster grille.
  4. Remove the I/P outer trim cover screws.
  5. Remove the outer trim covers from the I/P carrier.
  6. Remove the screws for the HVAC control. Leave the harnesses connected to the HVAC control and position aside. Refer to HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (CHEVROLET) or HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (PONTIAC) in HVAC Systems - Manual
  7. Remove the radio from the I/P carrier. Refer to RADIO REPLACEMENT in Entertainment.
  8. Remove the radio from the I/P carrier.
  9. Remove the right I/P trim panel screws.
  10. Remove the right I/P trim panel from the I/P carrier (3).
  11. Remove the I/P trim pad. Refer to TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) (CHEVROLET)  or TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) (PONTIAC)  .
  12. Remove the I/P SIR module. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT SYSTEM in SIR.
  13. Remove the air distribution ducts screws.
  14. Remove the air distribution duct.
  15. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL REPLACEMENT in Steering Wheel and Column.
  16. Remove the tilt lever. Refer to TILT LEVER REPLACEMENT in Steering Wheel and Column.
  17. Remove the washer lever. Refer to WIPERS/WASHER SWITCH REPLACEMENT in Wipers/Washer Systems.
  18. Remove the screws (4) from the I/P carrier (3).
  19. Remove the I/P carrier (3) from the lower tie bar (2).
  20. Remove the I/P carrier (3) from the vehicle.
