Diagnostic System Check (Engine Electrical)

  1. Perform the BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION. See BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION  . When complete, proceed to next step.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ON ignition, with engine OFF. Does the scan tool power up? If yes, proceed to next step. If no, see TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP .
    3. NOTE: Lack of communication may be because of a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.
  3. Turn ON ignition, with engine OFF. Attempt to communicate with the Body Control Module (BCM), the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on the class 2 serial data circuit. Does the scan tool communicate with all modules on the class 2 serial data circuit? If yes, proceed to next step. If no, see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH C .
    4. NOTE: The symptom list in Symptoms will determine the correct diagnostic procedure to use.
  4. Select the Display DTCs function for each module. If using a Tech 2, use the Class 2 DTC Check feature in order to determine which modules have DTCs set. Record all of the displayed DTCs, the DTC status, and the module which set the DTC. Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If yes, proceed to next step. If no, see SYMPTOMS (ENGINE ELECTRICAL)  .
    5. NOTE: The presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will collect all the available information before you perform tests.
  5. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "U"? If yes, see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH C . If no, proceed to next step.
  6. Does the scan tool display DTCs B1000 or B1001? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS.
