Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Did you perform the Hydraulic Brake Diagnostic System Check? If so, go to next step. If not, go to HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM TESTING  under SYSTEM TESTING.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, observe the PARK BRAKE SWITCH parameter in the BCM data list. Does the scan tool indicate that the PARK BRAKE SWITCH parameter is OK? If so, check for intermittent problem. If not, go to next step.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the park brake switch. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, observe the PARK BRAKE SWITCH parameter. Does the scan tool indicate that the PARK BRAKE SWITCH parameter is OK? If so, go to step  5. If not, go to next step.
  4. Test the signal circuit of the park brake switch for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  9.
  5. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the park brake switch. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  9. If not, go to step  7.
  6. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the Body Control Module (BCM). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  9. If not, go to step  8.
  7. Replace the park brake switch. See MASTER CYLINDER FLUID LEVEL SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step  9.
  8. Replace the BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULES article. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to next step.
  9. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step  2.
