Front Brake Pads: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before installing new brake pads, wipe the outside surface of the caliper boot clean. Use denatured alcohol. Bottom the piston into the caliper bore. Use an old brake pad or a wooden block across the face of the piston. Do not damage the piston or the caliper boot.
  2. Install the pads to the caliper. Install the caliper to the knuckle. Install the caliper bolts. Tighten the caliper bolts to 38 ft lbs. (51 N.m). Remove the 2 wheel lug nuts securing the rotor to the hub. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
  3. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance. Slowly release the brake pedal. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads. Fill the master cylinder to the proper level with clean brake fluid. See MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR FILLING  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION. Burnish the pads and the rotors.
