Brake Shoes: Installation

- Install the parking brake lever into the secondary shoe with the pin and the retaining ring. Install the adjusting screw assembly and the adjusting screw spring.
- Attach the parking brake cable. Install the shoe and lining assemblies. Install the parking brake strut and the strut spring, by spreading the shoes apart. Verify that the shoes are positioned correctly: The end without the strut spring should engage the parking brake lever and the secondary shoe and lining. The end with the strut spring should engage the primary shoe and lining.
- Install the actuator lever sleeve, the actuator lever and the lever return spring. Install the hold-down pins and the hold-down springs. Install the actuator link on the hold-down pin while you hold up on the lever.
- Install the shoe return springs using the Brake Spring Pliers (J-8057). See Fig 1. Adjust the drum brakes. See DRUM BRAKE ADJUSTMENT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION. Install the brake drum. Align the previous marks. Adjust the park brake system. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
NOTE:
Install the actuator lever sleeve between the secondary shoe and lining and the actuator lever.
