Rattle, Clunk Or Shudder Noise From Power Steering System

  1. Before performing procedure, review visual/physical inspection. See VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION  .
  2. Verify that a rattle, clunk or shudder noise is present. If a rattle or clunk noise is present, go to next step. If a rattle or clunk noise is not heard, power steering system is okay.
  3. Inspect the power steering hoses for proper routing and clearance. If routing of power steering hoses is incorrect, go to step  11 . If routing of power steering hoses is not incorrect, go to next step.
  4. Inspect the engine drive belt for cracking or excessive wear. If drive belt is cracked or excessively worn, go to step  12 . If drive belt is not cracked or excessively worn, go to next step.
  5. Inspect the power steering pump pulley for damage. If power steering pump pulley is damaged, go to step  13 . If power steering pump pulley is not damaged, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the power steering pump for the proper installation. If power steering pump installation is incorrect, go to step  14 . If power steering pump installation is not incorrect, go to next step.
  7. Inspect the power steering gear for the proper installation. If power steering gear installation is incorrect, go to step  15 . If power steering gear installation is correct, go to next step.
  8. Inspect the rack and pinion gear rack bearing preload adjustment. If rack and pinion gear rack bearing preload is incorrect, go to step  16 . If rack and pinion gear rack bearing preload is correct, go to next step.
  9. Inspect the suspension. If suspension is worn, go to step  17 . If suspension is not worn, go to step  11 .
  10. Inspect the intermediate steering shaft. If intermediate shaft is worn, go to step  18 . If intermediate shaft is not worn, go to step  3 .
  11. Adjust or replace the hoses. After completing repairs, go to step  19 .
  12. Replace the engine drive belt. After completing repairs, go to step  19 .
  13. Replace the power steering pump pulley. See POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After completing repairs, go to step  19 .
  14. Install the power steering pump correctly. After completing repairs, go to step  19 .
  15. Install the power steering gear correctly. After completing repairs, go to step  19 .
  16. Adjust the rack and pinion preload. See RACK BEARING PRELOAD  under ADJUSTMENTS. After completing repairs, go to step  19 .
  17. Replace the worn suspension components. After completing repairs, go to step  19 .
  18. Replace the intermediate shaft. After completing repairs, go to next step.
  19. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
