Bleeding Power Steering System

  1. Verify that the hoses do not touch any other part of the vehicle. Verify that all hose connections are tight. Remove the pump reservoir cap. Fill the pump reservoir with fluid to the FULL COLD level.
  2. Attach Power Steering Bleeder Adaptor (J-43485) to Metal MityVac (J-35555) or equivalent. Place the power steering bleeder adaptor on or in the pump reservoir filler neck. Apply a vacuum of 20 in Hg maximum. Wait 5 minutes. Typical vacuum drop is 2-3 in Hg. If the vacuum does not remain steady, see Excessive Vacuum Drop Diagnosis  .
  3. Remove power steering bleeder adaptor and the metal MityVac. Reinstall the pump reservoir cap. Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle. Turn off the engine. Verify the fluid level. Repeat above procedure until the fluid stabilizes.
    4. CAUTION: DO NOT turn steering wheel to lock.
  4. Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle. Turn the steering wheel 180-360 degrees in both directions 5 times. Switch the ignition off. Verify the fluid level.
  5. Repeat above procedure.
