Tilt Spring - Assemble (Off Vehicle): Assembly

CAUTION: The tilt spring and the spring guide are under pressure. The tilt spring and the spring guide may become a projectile. Secure the spring with locking pliers during removal. Secure the spring with locking pliers during installation. Bodily injury may result during removal and Installation of the tilt spring and the spring guide. Always use caution during removal and installation of the tilt spring and the spring guide.
  1. Lubricate the spring guide (1) with lithium grease.
  2. Install the spring guide (1) into the tilt spring (2).
  3. Insert the tilt spring into the steering column support assembly.

    Important:  The tabs on the spring retainer must fit inside of the steering column support assembly.

  4. Secure the tilt spring (2) with the spring retainer (3) by applying pressure to the spring retainer and turning counterclockwise.
  5. Release the pressure on the spring retainer (3) once the tabs are locked in place.

  6. Remove the steering column and J 41352  from the vise.
  7. Install the steering column from the vehicle.
  8. Install the steering wheel from the steering column.
  9. Install the tilt lever.
