Removal (Alero & Grand Am)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire, 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, 2002 Oldsmobile Alero, and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner mounting bracket. Disconnect clutch actuator line from clutch actuator. Remove clutch actuator line bracket bolt and position line and bracket out of the way.
  2. Disconnect shifter cables from transmission shift control levers. Remove cable bracket bolt and bracket.
  3. Disconnect the VSS electrical connector and position harness out of the way. Disconnect backup lamp switch electrical connector and position harness out of the way. Tie the radiator to the upper hood latch panel. Install Universal Engine Support Fixture (J-28467-B). See Figure .
  4. Remove the 2 remaining upper transaxle mounting bolts. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the front wheels and tires. Remove the left front fender liner.
  5. Disconnect the 2 front wheel speed sensor connectors. Unclip wheel speed sensor wire harness and position harness out of the way. Remove front suspension crossmember. Remove the starter.
  6. Remove transaxle front and rear mounts from transaxle. Remove the axle shafts from vehicle. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS - "J" & "N" BODIES article in DRIVE AXLES. Lower engine and transaxle assembly with engine support fixture enough to clear the left side inner body panel.
  7. Remove lower transaxle mounting bolts at the front of vehicle. Remove the remaining lower transaxle mounting bolts. Support and remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  8. Mark pressure plate in relation to flywheel for installation reference. Using a crisscross sequence, loosen pressure plate bolts, one turn at a time. Remove bolts, pressure plate and clutch disc. See Figure .
