Axle Shaft: Installation

- Install the axle shaft to the transaxle. See Figure .
- Verify that the axle shaft is properly engaged to the transaxle by grasping the inner tripod housing and pulling outward. DO NOT pull on the axle shaft bar. The axle shaft will remain firmly in place when properly engaged. Install the axle shaft to the hub and bearing assembly.
- Install the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. See LOWER BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the FRONT SUSPENSION article.
- Install the stabilizer link. See STABILIZER SHAFT LINK under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the FRONT SUSPENSION article.
- Install the wheel speed sensor harness into position and connect the electrical connector to the sensor. Connect the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle. See OUTER TIE ROD
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING.CAUTION: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the washer and the NEW axle shaft nut. See Figure . Insert a drift into the rotor and against the caliper in order to prevent the rotor from turning. Tighten the axle shaft nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.
