Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Sunfire and 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
    2. CAUTION: Refer to SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in SIR.
  3. With a flat-bladed tool, remove the instrument panel (I/P) defroster grille.
  4. Remove the I/P outer trim cover screws.
  5. Remove the outer trim covers from the I/P carrier.
  6. Remove the radio from the I/P carrier. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.
  7. Remove the right I/P trim panel screws.
  8. Remove the right I/P trim panel from the I/P carrier (3).
  9. Remove the I/P trim pad. Refer to Trim Pad Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) (Chevrolet)  or Trim Pad Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) (Pontiac) .
  10. Remove the I/P SIR module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  11. Remove the screw (4) from the HVAC temperature control cable.

  12. Remove the control cable end (3) from the door lever (2).
  13. Remove the HVAC control assembly from the I/P carrier. Leave the harnesses connected to the HVAC control and position aside. Refer to HVAC Control Assembly Replacement (Chevrolet) or HVAC Control Assembly Replacement (Pontiac) in HVAC Systems - Manual
  14. Remove the air distribution duct. Refer to Air Distributor Duct Replacement (Chevrolet) or Air Distributor Duct Replacement (Pontiac) in HVAC Systems - Automatic.
  15. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  16. Remove the tilt lever. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  17. Remove the washer lever. Refer to Wipers/Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
  18. Remove the screws (4) from the I/P carrier (3).

  19. Remove the I/P carrier (3) from the lower tie bar (2).
  20. Remove the I/P carrier (3) from the vehicle.
