Removal Procedure

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
Rotate the engine until the crankshaft sprocket mark aligns with the second silver link (2) at the 5 o'clock position.
Lower the vehicle.
Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
Ensure that the INT diamond on the intake camshaft sprocket is aligned with the copper link at (1) at the 2 o'clock position.

Ensure that the EXH triangle on the exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the silver link (3).

Remove the timing chain tensioner.

Remove the timing chain tensioner guide.

Remove the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement .
Remove the fixed timing chain guide access plug.

Remove the upper timing chain guide.

Use a 24 mm wrench to hold the camshafts from turning.

Remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt and discard.
Remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket.

Remove the intake camshaft sprocket bolt and discard.
Remove the intake camshaft sprocket.

Remove the timing chain through the top of the cylinder head.
Remove the crankshaft sprocket.

Remove the balance shaft drive chain tensioner.

Remove the adjustable balance shaft chain guide.

NOTE: It may ease removal of the balance shaft drive chain to get all of the slack in the chain between the crankshaft and water pump sprockets.
Remove the balance shaft drive chain.
