Installation Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Install the rear axle (2) to the vehicle.
- Install the following components to the rear axle (2):
- The rear axle mounting bolts (4)
- The washers (3)
- The nuts (1)
NOTE: See Fastener Notice - Tighten the nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 120 N.m (88 ft lbs). See Figure
- Install the shock absorber lower mounting bolt (9).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 70 N.m (51 ft lbs).
- Install the park brake cables to the rear axle. See PARK BRAKE CABLE (LEFT REAR) and PARK BRAKE CABLE (RIGHT REAR) in DISC & DRUM - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article in BRAKES.
- Connect the park brake cables to the equalizer. See PARK BRAKE CABLE (LEFT REAR) and PARK BRAKE CABLE (RIGHT REAR) in DISC & DRUM - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article in BRAKES.
- Install the wheel speed sensor wiring harness to the retainers on the rear axle. See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR REPLACEMENT -- REAR in ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in BRAKES.
- Connect the wheel speed sensor harness to the wheel speed sensors. See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR REPLACEMENT -- REAR in ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in BRAKES.
- Install the brake pipe to the brake hose and wheel cylinder.
Tighten
Tighten the fittings to 27 N.m (20 ft lbs).
- Install the brake pipe retainer bolts to the rear axle. See Figure
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 6 N.m (50 in lbs).
- Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
- Bleed the brakes. See BLEEDING in DISC & DRUM - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article in BRAKES.
- Adjust the parking brake. See PARKING BRAKE under ADJUST & INSPECTIONS in DISC & DRUM - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article in BRAKES.
- Lower the vehicle.
