Rear Axle Replacement: Removal

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in TIRES AND WHEELS.
  2. Remove the brake pipe retainer bolts from the rear axle. See Fig 1. Remove the brake pipe from the brake hose and wheel cylinder. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness from the wheel speed sensors. Refer to WHEEL SPEED SENSOR REPLACEMENT - REAR in ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM . Remove the wheel speed sensor wiring harness from the retainers on the rear axle.
  3. Disconnect the park brake cables from the equalizers. Refer to PARK BRAKE CABLE REPLACEMENT - LEFT REAR and PARK BRAKE CABLE REPLACEMENT - RIGHT REAR in PARK BRAKE. Remove the park brake cables from the rear axle.
  4. Support the rear axle with suitable jack stands. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolt (9). See Fig 2.
  5. Remove the rear axle mounting bolts (4), the washers (3) and the nuts (1) from the rear axle (2). Remove the rear axle (2) from the vehicle. See Fig 3.
