Rear Axle Replacement: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire and 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the rear axle (2) to the vehicle. Install the rear axle mounting bolts (4), the washers (3) and the nuts (1) to the rear axle (2). See Figure.
  2. Tighten the nuts. Tighten the nuts to 120 N.m (89 lb ft). Install the shock absorber lower mounting bolt (9). See Figure. Tighten the bolt to 70 N.m (51 lb ft).
  3. Install the park brake cables to the rear axle. Refer to PARK BRAKE CABLE REPLACEMENT - RIGHT REAR and PARK BRAKE CABLE REPLACEMENT - LEFT REAR in PARK BRAKE. Connect the park brake cables to the equalizer.
  4. Install the wheel speed sensor wiring harness to the retainers on the rear axle. Refer to WHEEL SPEED SENSOR REPLACEMENT - REAR in ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM . Connect the wheel speed sensor harness to the wheel speed sensors.
  5. Install the brake pipe to the brake hose and wheel cylinder. Tighten the fittings to 27 N.m (20 lb ft). See Figure. Install the brake pipe retainer bolts to the rear axle. Tighten the bolts to 6 N.m (50 lb in).
  6. Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in TIRES AND WHEELS. Bleed the brakes. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM in DISC BRAKES & DRUM BRAKES . Adjust the parking brake. See PARKING BRAKE ADJUSTMENT in DISC BRAKES & DRUM BRAKES .
  7. Lower the vehicle.
