Axle Shaft: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire and 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the axle shaft to the transaxle. See Fig 1 .
  2. Verify that the axle shaft is properly engaged to the transaxle by grasping the inner tripod housing and pulling outward. DO NOT pull on the axle shaft bar. The axle shaft will remain firmly in place when properly engaged. Install the axle shaft to the hub and bearing assembly. See Fig 2 .
  3. Install the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. See LOWER BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article.
  4. Install the stabilizer link. See STABILIZER LINK under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article.
  5. Install the wheel speed sensor harness into position and connect the electrical connector to the sensor. Connect the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle. See OUTER TIE ROD under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the appropriate STEERING GEAR article.
  6. Install the washer and the NEW axle shaft nut. See Figure . Insert a drift into the rotor and against the caliper in order to prevent the rotor from turning. Tighten the axle shaft nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.
