Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire and 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If you were sent here from SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKES  , go to next step. If you were not sent here from SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKES  , see DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT - HYDRAULIC BRAKES  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, observe the PARK BRAKE SWITCH parameter in the BCM data list. Does the scan tool indicate that the PARK BRAKE SWITCH parameter is okay? If so, check for intermittent problem. If not, go to next step.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the park brake switch. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, observe the PARK BRAKE SWITCH parameter. Does the scan tool indicate that the PARK BRAKE SWITCH parameter is okay? If so, go to step  5 . If not, go to next step.
  4. Test the signal circuit of the park brake switch for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  7 .
  5. Replace the park brake switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step  7 .
  6. Replace the BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT in appropriate BODY CONTROL SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step  7 .
  7. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, then system okay. If system is not okay, go to step  2 .
