Park Brake Cables: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire and 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the front park brake cable into the vehicle. Position the cable through the pass-thru opening to the vehicle underbody.
  2. Install the cable pass-thru grommet to the vehicle floor pan. Ensure that the grommet is fully seated. Secure the cable to the retaining clip on the floor pan. Install the carpet back into position.
  3. Install the left side carpet retainer. Install the rear seat cushion. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Install the front park brake cable guide retaining bolt. Tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Secure the front cable into the retaining strap along the left side of the axle. See Figure . Connect the front cable conduit end fitting to the cable equalizer.
  6. Secure the front cable end to the right cable connector.
  7. Lower the vehicle. Install the front park brake cable to the lever assembly. Ensure that the conduit end fitting is properly secured to the lever assembly.
  8. Install the cable end to the lever reel assembly. Restore the tension to the park brake cable system. See ENABLING PARK BRAKE CABLE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER  . Install the floor console.


  1. Insert the park brake cable through the opening in the backing plate. Only install the cable return spring to just rearward of the spring positioning tab on the backing plate.
  2. Push the cable forward toward the rear of the vehicle, along the outside of the secondary brake shoe, until the cable end is positioned just past the slot on the park brake lever.
  3. While holding the cable in position from front to rear, move the cable end to the back of the park brake lever.
  4. Press the cable down into the slot on the lever, then pull the cable forward to the front of the vehicle to secure the cable end to the slot.
  5. While continuing to pull the cable away from the lever, insert a flat-bladed screwdriver into the opening on the lever to prevent the cable from lifting out of the slot on the lever. Move the cable return spring through the opening in the backing plate.
  6. Secure the cable fitting to the backing plate. Attempt to pull the park brake cable free of the backing plate, to ensure that the retaining tabs on the fitting are properly secured.
  7. Install the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM  .
  8. Install the left rear tire and wheel assembly.
  9. Secure the park brake cable conduit end fitting to the axle bracket. See Figure .
  10. Press the cable firmly to secure the cable conduit end fitting to the axle bracket. Attempt to pull the cable away from the bracket to ensure that the cable is properly seated.
  11. Secure the cable end to the cable equalizer. See Figure . Lower the vehicle.
  12. Restore the tension to the park brake cable system. See ENABLING PARK BRAKE CABLE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.

  7. Install the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM  .
  8. Install the right rear tire and wheel assembly. Secure the park brake cable conduit end fitting to the axle bracket.
  9. Press the cable firmly to secure the cable conduit end fitting to the axle bracket. Attempt to pull the cable away from the bracket to ensure that the cable is properly seated.
  10. Secure the cable end to the cable equalizer.
  11. Lower the vehicle. Restore the tension to the park brake cable system. See ENABLING PARK BRAKE CABLE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.
