Drum Brake Backing Plate: Installation

  1. Install the brake backing plate. Install the wheel bearing/hub assembly.
  2. Install the wheel cylinder. See WHEEL CYLINDER  .
  3. Secure the rear park brake cable end fitting to the brake backing plate. Attempt to pull the park brake cable free of the backing plate, to ensure that the retaining tabs on the fitting are properly secured.
  4. Install the universal spring to the backing plate. Install the brake shoes. See BRAKE SHOES  .
  5. Adjust the drum brakes. See DRUM BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  in DRUM BRAKE SYSTEM under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.
  6. Install the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM  .
  7. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. See BLEEDING THE BRAKE SYSTEM  . Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.
