Brake Shoes: Removal

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Remove the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM  . Remove the adjuster spring. Disengage the adjuster spring hook end from the tab on the adjuster actuator lever, then release the spring from the brake shoe web hole.
  3. Remove the adjuster actuator lever from the pivot. Using the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover, spread the top of the brake shoes apart and remove the adjuster assembly from the brake shoes.
  4. Position the hook end of the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover under the universal spring and lightly pull the universal spring end out of the shoe web hole. Hold the universal spring with the tool while removing the secondary brake shoe.
  5. Release the park brake cable from the park brake lever on the secondary shoe.
  6. Position the hook end of the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover under the universal spring and lightly pull the universal spring end out of the shoe web hole. Hold the universal spring with the tool while removing the primary brake shoe.
