Test D: Speedometer &/Or Odometer Inoperative

  1. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located at lower left side of instrument panel, near steering column. Raise and support vehicle. Start engine. Place transmission in Drive (A/T) or third gear (M/T). Using scan tool, observe VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR parameter in PCM ENGINE DATA 1 data list. If VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR parameter matches speedometer display, go to next step. If VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR parameter does not match speedometer display, go to step  4.
  3. If odometer does not operate correctly, go to next step. If odometer operates correctly, check speedometer and/or odometer circuits for intermittent condition by performing tests while wiggling related wiring and connectors. This can often cause malfunction to appear.
  4. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  5. Check system for proper operation. If system operates properly, test is complete. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2
