DTC P0461: Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Performance: Testing

  1. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Remove fuel tank module. Fuel tank module is located under rear of vehicle. Inspect for a stuck fuel level sender and/or foreign material in fuel tank. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step  4. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  3. Replace fuel level sender. See FUEL PUMP in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article under ENGINE PERFORMANCE. For 2002, see FUEL PUMP in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article under ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repairs, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within conditions for running DTC. See CODE ENABLE CRITERIA . If DTC does not reset, system is okay at this time. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
