Vehicle Theft Deterrent Diagnostic System Test

NOTE: Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) system may be referred to as Passlock(tm) system.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on left side of instrument panel, near steering column. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Attempt to establish communication with Body Control Module (BCM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with BCM and PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with BCM and PCM, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Select DISPLAY DTCs function for BCM and PCM on scan tool. If any DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If no DTCs are retrieved, diagnose and repair Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) system by symptom. See ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article. For 2002, see ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article.
  4. If communication DTCs (DTCs beginning with a "U") are not retrieved, go to next step. If any DTCs beginning with a "U" are retrieved, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS. If any powertrain DTCs (DTCs beginning with a "P") are retrieved, diagnose and repair powertrain concern. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.   5. If DTC B1000, B1004, B1007, or B1009 are not retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1000, B1004, B1007, or B1009 are retrieved, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  6. If DTC P0601-P0607, P1600, P1621, P1627, or P1683 are not retrieved, go to next step. If DTC P0601-P0607, P1600, P1621, P1627, or P1683 are retrieved, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.   7. If DTC B1327 or B1328 are retrieved, go to GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. For 2002, go to GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If DTC B1327 or B1328 are not retrieved, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
