Test B: Shift Lever Can Be Moved Without Brake Pedal Depressed
- Did you review the DESCRIPTION and OPERATION and perform the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, see DESCRIPTION & OPERATION .
- Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position without pressing the brake pedal. Does the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, go to next step. If not, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Move the gearshift lever to the Park position. Connect a test light between ground and the stoplamp switch ignition feed circuit (Pink wire). Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 12 .
- Connect a test light between ground and the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at the stoplamp switch. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 9 .
- Connect a test light between ground and the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at the shift lock solenoid. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 13 .
- Connect a test light between battery voltage and the ground circuit (Tan/White wire) at the shift lock solenoid. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to step 10 . If not, go to next step.
- Connect a test light between battery voltage and the PNP switch signal circuit (Orange/Black wire) at the PNP switch. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to step 14 . If not, go to next step.
- Connect a test light between battery voltage and the PNP switch ground circuit (Black/White wire) at the PNP switch. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to step 11 . If not, go to step 15 .
- Inspect the stoplamp switch for proper adjustment. See STOPLAMP SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. Inspect the stoplamp switch for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 19 . If not, go to step 16 .
- Inspect the shift lock solenoid for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 19 . If not, go to step 17 .
- Inspect for proper PNP switch adjustment. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. Inspect for poor connections at the PNP switch. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step 19 . If not, go to step 18 .
- Repair the open in the stoplamp switch ignition feed circuit (Pink wire). After repairs, go to step 19 .
- Repair the open in the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire). After repairs, go to step 19 .
- Repair the open in the PNP switch signal circuit (Orange/Black wire). After repairs, go to step 19 .
- Repair the open in the PNP switch ground circuit (Black/White wire). After repairs, go to step 19 .
- Replace the stoplamp switch. See STOPLAMP SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 19 .
- Replace the shift lock solenoid. See SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 19 .
- Replace PNP switch. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. After repairs, go to next step.
- Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 2 .
