Diagnostic Aids

Inspect for the following:
Inspect for a Loose or damaged VSS rotor -- A damaged VSS rotor may cause an erratic or incorrect vehicle speed to be displayed. Refer to the Manual Transmission section for on-vehicle service.
Many situations may lead to an intermittent condition. The following list is to be used as a guide to assist in detecting an intermittent:

Important: Remove any debris from the connector surfaces before servicing a component. Inspect the connector gaskets when diagnosing or replacing a component. Verify that the gaskets are installed correctly. The gaskets prevent intrusion of contaminates.
- Inspect the harness connector for the following conditions:
- Loose terminal connections
- Backed out terminals
- Improper mating
- Broken locks
- Improperly formed or damaged terminals
- Faulty terminal to wire connections. Use a corresponding mating terminal to test for proper tension. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections, and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
- Inspect the wiring harness for damage. If the harness inspection does not reveal a problem, observe the display on the scan tool while moving connectors and wiring harnesses related to the sensor. A change in the scan tool display may indicate the location of the fault. Refer to Circuit Testing , and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems for diagnosis and repair.
- Inspect the PCM and the engine grounds for clean and secure connections. Refer to Wiring Systems for diagnosis and repair.
If the DTC is determined to be intermittent, reviewing the Failure Records can be useful in determining when the DTC was last set. Refer to Intermittent Conditions in Engine Controls.
