Diagnostic Procedures

  1. If powertrain diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If powertrain diagnostic system check was not performed, go to POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM TESTS. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Verify that Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) is operating properly. If IPC is not operating properly, diagnose concern. Go to appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If IPC is operating properly, turn ignition on. Using scan tool, command MIL on and off. If MIL turns on and off as commanded, go to next step. If MIL does not turn on or off when commanded, go to step  4.
  3. Observe FREEZE FRAME and/or FAILURE RECORDS data on scan tool. Turn ignition off for at least 30 seconds. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If DTC resets, go to next step. If DTC does not reset, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Check GAUGES fuse (10-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block. If fuse is blown, go to step  10. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Locate PCM and disconnect connector C2. See Figure. Turn ignition on. If MIL is off, go to next step. If MIL is on, go to step  11.
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove GAUGES fuse from instrument panel fuse block. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 46 (Brown/White wire). See Figure. If zero volts is indicated, go to next step. If any voltage is indicated, go to step  12.
  7. Turn ignition off. Reinstall GAUGES fuse. Turn ignition on. Monitor MIL indicator. Using a fused jumper wire connected to ground, probe PCM connector C2 terminal No. 46 (Brown/White wire). If MIL turns on, go to step  15. If MIL does not turn on, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Turn ignition on. Connect test light between ground and IPC connector terminal A3 (Pink wire). See Figure. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  13.
  9. Check for open or high resistance in Brown/White wire between IPC connector terminal A8 and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 46. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18. If circuit is okay, go to step  14.
  10. Repair short to ground in Pink wire between IPC connector terminal A3 and GAUGES fuse. After repairs, go to step  18.
  11. Repair short to ground in Brown/White wire between IPC connector terminal A8 and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 46. See Figure and Figure . After repairs, go to step  18.
  12. Repair short to voltage in Brown/White wire between IPC connector terminal A8 and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 46. See Figure. After repairs, go to step  18.
  13. Repair open in Pink wire between IPC connector terminal A3 and GAUGES fuse. After repairs, go to step  18.
  14. Check for poor connections at IPC connector terminals. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18. If connections are okay, go to step  16.
  15. Check for poor connections at PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18. If connections are okay, go to step  17.
  16. Replace IPC. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs, go to step  18.
  17. Replace PCM. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. After repairs, go to next step.
  18. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for at least 30 seconds. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, go to step  2.
  19. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
