Diagnostic Procedures

- If powertrain diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If powertrain diagnostic system check was not performed, go to POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM TESTS. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, review FREEZE FRAME and/or FAILURE RECORDS data and note parameters. Turn ignition off for at least 30 seconds. Start engine and operate vehicle within conditions required for this diagnostic to run, and as close to conditions recorded in FREEZE FRAME and/or FAILURE RECORDS as possible. Select DTC function, then enter this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test failed this ignition, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test failed this ignition, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- urn ignition off. Disconnect suspect ignition coil connector. Connect DVOM between ground and suspect ignition coil connector terminal "C". See IGNITION COIL CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION table. Set DVOM to DC Hertz (Hz) scale. Start and operate engine at idle. Check frequency of IC signal circuit. If frequency is not 3-20 Hz, go to next step. If frequency is 3-20 Hz, go to step 7.
- Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and suspect ignition coil connector terminal "C". If voltage is less than 1.0 volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than 1.0 volt, go to step 13.
- Turn ignition off. Locate PCM and disconnect connector C1. See Figure. Using DVOM, check continuity of ignition control circuit between suspect ignition coil connector terminal "C" and corresponding PCM connector terminal. See IGNITION COIL CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION table. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step 14.
- Check for short to ground in ignition control circuit between suspect ignition coil connector terminal "C" and corresponding PCM connector terminal. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17. If circuit is okay, go to step 15.
- Turn engine off. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to ground, probe suspect ignition coil connector terminal "D" (Pink wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 9.
- Connect test light to battery voltage and probe suspect ignition coil connector terminal "A" (Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to step 11. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 10.
- Repair open in Pink wire between suspect ignition coil connector terminal "D" and splice S124 (right side) or splice S122 (left side). S124 is located between suspect ignition coil and connector C107 located on top of right side valve cover. S122 is located between suspect ignition coil and connector C106 located on top of left side valve cover. After repairs, go to step 17.
- Repair open in Black wire between suspect ignition coil connector terminal "A" and splice S127 (right side) or splice S126 (left side). S127 is located between suspect ignition coil and connector C107 located on top of right side valve cover. S126 is located between suspect ignition coil and connector C106 located on top of left side valve cover. After repairs, go to step 17.
- Check for poor connection at suspect ignition coil connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17. If connection is okay, go to next step.
- Replace suspect ignition coil. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. After replacing module, go to step 17.
- Repair short to voltage in suspect circuit. After repairs, go to step 17.
- Repair open in suspect circuit. After repairs, go to step 17.
- Check for poor connections at PCM connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17. If connection or terminal tension is okay, go to next step.
- Replace PCM. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for at least 30 seconds. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, go to step 2.
- Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
