Diagnostic Procedures

  1. If powertrain diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If powertrain diagnostic system check was not performed, go to POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM TESTS. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. If engine starts and runs, go to next step. If engine does not start and run, go to step  4.
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, review FREEZE FRAME and/or FAILURE RECORDS data and note parameters. Turn ignition off for at least 30 seconds. Start engine and operate vehicle within conditions required for this diagnostic to run, and as close to conditions recorded in FREEZE FRAME and/or FAILURE RECORDS as possible. Select DTC function then enter this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test failed this ignition, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test failed this ignition, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Turn engine off. Turn ignition on. Raise and support vehicle. Locate and disconnect CKP sensor connector. See Figure. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and CKP sensor connector terminal "C" (Light Green wire). If battery voltage is indicated, go to next step. If battery voltage is not indicated, go to step  8.
  5. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between CKP sensor connector terminals "B" (Yellow/Black wire) and "C" (Light Green wire). If battery voltage is indicated, go to next step. If battery voltage is not indicated, go to step  9.
  6. Momentarily connect test light between CKP sensor connector terminals "A" (Dark Blue/White wire) and "C" (Light Green wire). If fuel pump operates when test light is connected, go to step  11. If fuel pump does not operate when test light is connected, go to next step.
  7. Reconnect CKP sensor connector. Turn ignition off. Locate PCM and disconnect connector C1. See Figure. Connect a fused jumper wire between battery voltage and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 2 (Light Green wire). See Figure. Connect a second jumper wire between ground and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 21 (Yellow/Black wire). Set DVOM set to 40-volt AC scale and measure voltage between ground and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 12 (Dark Blue/White wire). Crank engine using ignition switch. If voltage reading is 4-6 volts, go to step  15. If voltage reading is not 4-6 volts, go to step  10.
  8. Check for open or short to ground in Light Green wire between CKP sensor and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 2. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If circuit is okay, go to step  15.
  9. Check for open or poor connections in Yellow/Black wire between CKP sensor and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 21. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If circuit is okay, go to step  15.
  10. Check for open, short to ground or short to voltage in Dark Blue/White wire between CKP sensor and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 12. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
    NOTE: Whenever CKP sensor or reluctor wheel is removed or replaced, crankshaft variation learn procedure must be performed after installation. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE  under PROGRAMMING.
  11. Visually inspect CKP sensor for physical damage, looseness or improper installation. Check for wiring routed too close to secondary ignition components. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If components and circuits are okay, go to next step.
  12. Check for poor connections at CKP sensor. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If connections are okay, go to step  14.
  13. Remove CKP sensor and check for reluctor wheel damage. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If reluctor wheel is okay, go to next step.
  14. Replace CKP sensor. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. After replacing sensor, go to step  16.
  15. Replace PCM. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  16. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for at least 30 seconds. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, go to step  2.
  17. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
