Diagnostic Procedures

  1. If powertrain diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step. If powertrain diagnostic system check was not performed, go to POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM TESTS. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor Throttle Position (TP) sensor angle. Move throttle slowly from closed to wide open position. If TP sensor angle changes steadily from zero percent to 98 percent, go to next step. If TP sensor angle does not change steadily from zero percent to 98 percent, go to DTC P0121: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT INSUFFICIENT ACTIVITY .
  3. Using scan tool, monitor MAP sensor pressure. Compare this value to value of known-good vehicle. If difference between vehicles is less than 3 kPa, go to next step. If difference between vehicles is more than 3 kPa, go to step  8.
  4. While monitoring MAP sensor pressure, start engine. If MAP sensor value changes, go to next step. If MAP sensor value does not change, go to step  8.
  5. Turn ignition off. Locate and disconnect vacuum hose from MAP sensor. See Figure. Ensure electrical connector remains connected. Connect hand-held vacuum pump to MAP sensor. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor MAP sensor pressure as vacuum is slowly applied 1 in. Hg at a time. If each in. Hg of vacuum results in 3-4 kPa drop in MAP sensor pressure, go to next step. If each in. Hg of vacuum does not result in 3-4 kPa drop in MAP sensor pressure, go to next step  16.
  6. Monitor MAP sensor on scan tool. Apply 20 in. Hg of vacuum using hand-held vacuum pump. If MAP sensor pressure is less than 34 kPa, go to next step. If MAP sensor pressure is more than 34 kPa, go to step  8.
  7. Disconnect hand-held vacuum pump from MAP sensor. If MAP sensor pressure matched value noted in step  3, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If MAP sensor pressure does not match value noted in step  3, go to step  16.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAP sensor electrical connector. Turn ignition on. Monitor MAP sensor voltage on scan tool. If scan tool indicates MAP sensor voltage is more than 0.1 volt, go to step  15. If scan tool indicates MAP sensor voltage is less than 0.1 volt, go to next step.
  9. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between MAP sensor connector terminals "B" (Light Green wire) and "C" (Gray wire). If scan tool indicates MAP sensor voltage is approximately 5 volts, go to next step. If scan tool indicates MAP sensor voltage is not approximately 5 volts, go to step  14.
  10. Remove jumper wire. Using DVOM, measure voltage between MAP sensor connector terminal "C" (Gray wire) and ground. If voltage is more than 5.2 volts, go to step  12. If voltage is less than 5.2 volts, go to next step.
  11. Using a test light connected to battery positive voltage, probe MAP sensor connector terminal "A" (Orange/Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  16. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  13.
  12. Check for short to voltage in Gray wire between MAP sensor connector terminal "C" and PCM connector C1 terminal No. 48. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  20. If circuit is okay, go to step  17.
  13. Check for high resistance or open in Orange/Black wire between MAP sensor connector terminal "A" and PCM connector C1 terminal No. 54. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  20. If circuit is okay, go to step  17.
  14. Check for high resistance in Gray wire between MAP sensor connector terminal "C" and PCM connector C1 terminal No. 48. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  20. If circuit is okay, go to step  17.
  15. Check for short to voltage in Light Green wire between MAP sensor connector terminal "B" and PCM connector C2 terminal No. 32. See Figure. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  20. If circuit is okay, go to step  17.
  16. Check for poor connections at MAP sensor connector terminals. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  20. If circuit is okay, go to step  18.
  17. Check for poor connections at PCM connector terminals. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  20. If circuit is okay, go to step  19.
  18. Replace MAP sensor. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. After repairs, go to step  20.
  19. Replace PCM. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. After repairs, go to next step.
  20. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for at least 30 seconds. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, go to step  2.
  21. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
