Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Pontiac Firebird, 2000 Chevrolet Corvette, and 2000 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK . After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Check if DTC P1221 and P1518 are also set. If DTC P1518 is set, diagnose DTC P1518 first. See DTC P1518: THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL (TAC) MODULE SERIAL DATA CIRCUIT ("Y" BODY) . If DTC P1518 is not set, go to next step.
  3. If DTC P1221 is set, diagnose DTC P1221 first. See DTC P1221: THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR NO. 1 & 2 PERFORMANCE ("Y" BODY) . If DTC P1221 is not set, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off for 15 seconds, then turn ignition on, with engine off. Set scan tool in TAC DATA LIST mode. Monitor TP sensors No. 1 and 2 angle while slowly opening throttle to WOT, then slowly returning it to closed position. If TP angle increases as throttle is opened and decreases when throttle is closed, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If TP angle does not increase as throttle is opened and decrease when throttle is closed, go to next step.
    NOTE: Disconnecting TAC motor harness connector will set additional DTC. Ensure DTCs are cleared after performing diagnostic test.
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove duct from throttle body assembly. Disconnect Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) motor harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Open throttle to WOT then close throttle blade. Observe TP sensors No. 1 and 2 angle. If TP angle increases as throttle is opened and decreases as throttle is closed, go to next step. If TP angle does not increase as throttle is opened and decrease when throttle is closed, go to step  17.
  6. Turn ignition off. Leave TAC motor disconnected. Disconnect TAC module harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a DVOM connected to battery ground, check voltage to each TAC motor harness connector terminals. If any voltage is present, go to step  11. If no voltage is present, go to next step.
  7. Check resistance of each TAC motor circuit between TAC module harness connector. If resistance is 0-5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-5 ohms, go to step  12.
  8. Check continuity of each TAC motor circuit to battery ground. If continuity exists, go to step  13. If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
  9. Check continuity of each TAC motor circuit at harness connector and all other circuits in both TAC module harness connectors. If continuity exists, go to step  14. If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition off. Reconnect TAC module harness connector. Connect a test light across TAC motor connector terminals. Turn ignition on. If test light illuminates briefly when ignition is turned on, go to step  15. If test light does not illuminate when ignition is turned on, go to step  17.
  11. Repair short to voltage in affected TAC motor circuit. After repairs, go to step  19.
  12. Repair open or high resistance in affected TAC motor circuit. After repairs, go to step  19.
  13. Repair short to ground in affected TAC motor circuit. After repairs, go to step  19.
  14. Repair circuits shorted together. After repairs, go to step  19.
  15. Check for poor connection at TAC motor harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  19. If connection is okay, go to next step.
  16. Replace throttle body assembly. After replacing throttle body, go to step  19.
  17. Check for poor connections at TAC module harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  19. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  18. Replace TAC module. After replacing module, go to next step.
  19. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter this DTC. Operate vehicle within conditions that set DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, repeat step  2.
  20. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, diagnose affected DTCs. If no DTCs are set, system is okay.
